Dear Members:
Your association, together with the Metis Group LLC, will hold a
seminar on Monday, February 22nd, on the Labor Law Standards &
Updates on Taxing Initiatives for Restaurant Owners and
Managers, followed by our general membership meeting.
Our featured Guest Speakers are:
Craig S. Roberts, Esq., Jackson Lewis LLP – partner in the Long
Island office of Jackson Lewis LLP. Mr. Roberts practices in all
areas of employment-relations law, with special emphasis on wage
and hour and disability management matters under both state and
federal laws. He has successfully defended audits conducted by
the U.S. and New York State Department of Labor and has
negotiated very favorable settlements with both agencies in
various matters. Mr. Roberts is a frequent speaker before
employer groups about wage and hour and disability management
compliance matters and strategies to avoid liability. He has
conducted training on a host of issues, including minimum wage
and overtime law compliance, proper exemption classification,
employee record keeping and independent contractor status, and
the interplay between the Americans with Disabilities Act, the
Family and Medical Leave Act and Workers’ Compensation laws.
Felice B. Ekelman, Esq., Jackson Lewis LLP – partner in the New
York City office of Jackson Lewis LLP. Ms. Ekelman has been
engaged exclusively in the practice of labor and employment law
on behalf of management and has represented employers in federal
and state courts, and before the National Labor Relations Board,
the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the Department of
Labor Wage and Hour Division, and other federal, state, and city
administrative agencies. She has defended dozens of restaurants
in New York City in class and collective action litigation. She
also regularly counsels restaurants, nightclubs, and lounges in
connection with wage hour compliance issues.
Steven L. Topal, CPA, Metis Group LLC – a partner in the New
York City office of Metis Group LLC and a U.R.T.O. associate
member, Steve has over 25 years of experience as a Certified
Public Accountant. He specializes in the hospitality industry,
especially restaurants, taverns, and pubs.
Following their presentation, we will hold the general
membership portion of our meeting.
Various issues will be addressed:
Terry Flynn, Jr., Esq., will address ASCAP and the SLA;
Proposed new grading system by the Board of Health;
Financial report from our dinner dance;
2010 Golf Outing;
2010 Dinner Dance.
As part of our on-going effort to increase our membership,
consider bringing a friend or neighbor who is not a member but
who may have an interest in our association.

As a reminder, the Board of Health
is holding a public hearing on the new grading system on
Friday, February 5th from 10 a.m. to 12:00 noon at their offices
at 125 Worth Street, New York, NY 10013. All persons wishing to

enforcement and elected officials being launched by the The
United Restaurant and Tavern Owners Association to teach
bartenders, waiters, waitresses and staff alcohol safety
measures to bars, taverns and restaurants across
New York
for its millions of patrons. The
URTO is forming the
first New York
City chapter of BADD.
Bars Against Drunk Driving to ensure safety throughout the year.
NYC Bars Against Drunk Driving (BADD)
would like to invite you and your staff to attend our first
meeting on
Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at
11:30 with about a hundred bartenders, owners and
other beverage
industry staff. It will take place at O'Casey's
Restaurant located on 22 E. 41st St. (between Madison & 5th
Ave.) in Manhattan.
We expect government officials,
Mothers Against
Drunk Driving as well as media to attend our first
organizational meeting. It is a important time to get a safe
holiday message out before the Christmas, and New Years to
members of the
hospitality industry. The press conference and meeting
will only take an hour.

The first NYC Bartenders Ball-End of the Summer Bash was held
Monday evening under the starry skies at P.D. O'Hurley's Pier
84, 44th Street and 12th Avenue. Our thanks to all those who

The Perfect Pint Restaurants in Midtown Manhattan, as our
"U.R.T.O. Man of the Year," and John Esposito, President and CEO
of Bacardi USA, as our "U.R.T.O. Industry Man of the Year."
You should be receiving your invitations in the mail next week.
We are expectng a large turnout, so please make your
reservations early. Should you wish to send a congratulatory
message to our two honorees by taking an ad in our souvenir
journal, please let us know as soon as possible, as we would
like to have all ads in by October 9th.
FYI - You may have read in the paper that The Tavern on the
Green has been sold. If you have never been to this landmark
restaurant, this may be your last chance to attend an event
at The Tavern as we know it today. The new owners, should the
sale go through, plan extensive renovations, and we would
hate for you to miss enjoying the ambience of the Crystal
Room, a unique dining experience, and dancing under the
twinkling lights of this great New York eatery before it changes
forever. It's an experience you don't want to miss!

Hope you all are enjoying a prosperous summer.
Bartenders Ball - End of the Summer Bash - September 14th
By now you must have all received the flyer on the Bartenders
Ball-End of the Summer Bash which we, together with the Daily
News and MurphGuide, are
hosting on Monday evening, September 14th at Pier 84, 44th
Street and 12th Avenue from 7:00 -l 11:00 p.m.
A contest for Best Bartender, Best Pub, Best Hostess, Best
Waiter/Waitress, etc. will be posted on MurphGuide.com and the
winners will be announced at the party and printed in the Daily
News.
So, don't forget to vote! This event is a chance for you and
all members of your staff to aid your association in its
philanthropic efforts Proceeds from the Bartenders Ball will go
to a most worthy charity, Free Family Residences and Essential
Enterprises, which aids children and adults with Autism and Down
Syndrome. We hope you will display your flyer as everyone is
welcome.
For a mere $50, which includes an open bar and hors d'oeuvres,
you can sway to the tunes of the D.J. and enjoy and evening at a
great venue overlooking the Hudson River.
Please spread the word and join us for a fun evening on
September 14th. 72nd Annual Dinner Dance - November 11,
2009. Arrangements for our 72nd Annual Dinner Dance are in its
